Once everything is over, and a nagging cough remains...

...might want to upgrade that to high level cardio. I'll normally keep a small cough for a month or two afterwards.

The best way I've found to get rid of that is to "blow it out" by running or other aerobic activity. If I start a week or two after the crud, I have recovered enough to stomp out that nagging cough. It's normally gone in a couple days after starting this regiment.

Oh, and keep taking Vitamin C. One thing I've discovered is that when I didn't take C on a daily basis, would have about two colds/year. Once I started taking it, that dropped to one cold ever 2-3 years. Don't know if it works that well for everyone else, but it does the job for me.
